Keccak is a cryptographic hash function that forms the foundation of the SHA-3 (Secure Hash Algorithm 3) standard. It was selected by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in 2012 after a public competition. Unlike its predecessors, Keccak uses a unique sponge construction, allowing it to absorb input data and produce a fixed-size output. This design enhances security against certain cryptographic attacks. In the crypto space, Keccak ensures data integrity, security, and trust in blockchain transactions. It is widely implemented for hashing, digital signatures, and authentication processes across various platforms and cryptocurrencies.
